AIM SOLO 2

AiM Data Systems recently announced an upgrade to our favorite road racing, HPDE and track day lap timer and data system, the AiM Solo and Solo DL. We are thrilled to see the changes they've made by introducing the AiM Solo 2 and Solo 2 DL (and just as importantly the features they've retained).

To review, the Solo is a lap timer and the Solo DL has those same lap timer functions but adds data, like throttle and brake pressure, generally from your car's OBD II port. We are particularly fond of the Solo DL, which can act as a mini data system doing important parts of what we get in the $4000 AiM or Motec systems used in our pro race cars.

A few strong points of the Solo DL:

1. Small size: easy transportability and installation (we generally bring a RAM suction cup mount and attach it to the windshield)

2. Battery powered: GPS antenna is internal; no power cable needed; hookup usually only requires one cable (for data from your ECU)

3. Easy to use: just hit the power button and you're in business (seriously, that's it)

4. Large display: lap times are easy to see at a glance

5. Rugged construction: AiM products use industrial-grade parts for reliability in harsh environments

6. De facto standard software: lots of race cars use AiM systems and most coaches are familiar with AiM data analysis software

The new Solo 2 DL adds a few nifty features to this list:

7. Programmable LEDs: These lights, which border the display, can be used to indicate changes in lap times or as shift lights

8. WiFi connection: download your data to a laptop without a cable (that you forgot)

9. iPhone connectivity: use your phone for data analysis

10. Large track database: the Solo 2 now comes with over 3000 tracks installed (see point 3)
